Cheerleading
Registration for 2009 Season Begins July 27th.
Recreation League Cheerleading is a program for girls to cheer for the Recreation League Football Teams. This is rec league cheerleading not competition squad. We obtain volunteer coaches and assign girls to squads for the season. They are to attend all games and cheer for the team they are assigned to. Rain or shine. Football games are played in the rain. There is a cheerleading competition at the end of the season that the squad may elect to participate. This is an optional competition. It is extra. The Cheerleading season is finished once the regular season games have been played.
AGE GROUPS : Cheerleading is divided into three age divisions 7-8, 9-10, and 11-12 year old children. You may also enroll your daughter in Flag Football. Flag Football is for ages 5 & 6 years.
A child must be 7 by September 1st of the current year and not turn 13 by September 1st of the current year.
MASCOTS: All mascots are appointed by the head coaches of the squads. We will take a list of mascots for the Head coaches but we do not appoint them. You must fill out a registration form and have your child placed on the mascot list. There is no guarantee that the child will be placed on a squad. The coaches are allowed up to four mascots per squad. A mascot must be two years younger than the age division they are wanting to be placed with ie: if you want to cheer with 11-12 year olds as a mascot then you cannot be any older than 9 years old. The age control date is September 1st, of the current year. There is no fee for being a mascot. All mascots are subject to the same charges and regulations as the cheerleaders. They must have a youth registration form on fill in our office.
REGISTRATION DATES: Cheerleading registration is always the last week of July and first week of August. It is very important to register during these times so you will be able to be placed on a squad and order your uniform on time.
AGE CONTROL DATES: The date that determines what age group your child will participate is called the age control date. This date is a state set rule and we must use it to place children in age groups. The age control date for cheerleading is a child’s age as of September 1st, of the current year. A child can not turn 13 before this date or they are not eligible to play. There is also a date to determine when a child may begin to play/cheer in a local league. This date is sometimes different from the age control date. With Cheerleading it is not different. A child must be 7 by September 1st of the current year to be eligible to register as a cheerleader. No six year olds may be moved up. Moving up: A child may move up to an older age group once they have attained the eligible age to participate. 8 year olds may move up to 9-10s’, 10 year olds may move up to 11-12s’.
WHAT’S NEXT AFTER REGISTRATION?
You will wait to hear from a coach. You should hear from a coach by one week after late registration ends. All registered participants will placed on a squad. There is a Mandatory Play rule and all participants who register will play. You may make a request for a certain team or coach. You may have a transportation request. We cannot promise your request will be granted. We will honor it if at all possible but due to team roster rules the request may not be granted.
GAMES: The teams usually have two games per week. Game days are Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. The games are played in Woodbine at the Woodbine Hwy 110 Community Park Football Field, in St. Mary’s at the St. Mary’s Rec Authority Park Football Field, and in Kingsland at Chris Gilman Stadium.
PRACTICES: Practices will begin as soon as the rosters are finalized. We must have all of the coaches before we can disperse the cheerleaders onto rosters. So this means if we have trouble getting coaches it will take longer for the practices to begin. If you receive a call stating we need a coach for your squad this will mean that we dispersed the girls onto squads and allowed the squads that have a coach to begin practice . Practices will be held at the game sites except for Kingsland. Kingsland will practice at Howard Peeples Park on Gross Road due to construction at Kingsland Lions Park. The coaches are asked to start at 5:30pm or later. The practice days and times are scheduled by the head coach through the athletic staff. You should always hold your practice at a PSA property.
SEASON: We try to start the league by the first weekend of September. The season will end by the second week of November with the allstar games usually played the first week of December. At the end of the season, your squad may elect to participate in the cheerleading competition. This is an optional activity your coach is not required to participate.
